The Growing Importance of Working to Reduce Atmospheric Carbon

Planet Earth’s atmosphere, ecosystem, and natural environment are, frankly, everyone’s problem and with the damage, pollution, and poison afflicted upon the natural world having solely been caused by the products of mankind’s desires, it is mankind’s job to fix it.

One of the more pressing concerns for the natural world’s health and ultimately, survival, is atmospheric carbon, and outlined in the following article is exactly why reducing these levels holds the key to preventing climate change and saving the planet.

What Exactly is Atmospheric Carbon?

Accounting for between 75 and 77 percent of the total greenhouse effect, atmospheric carbon is understandably the primary target in the fight to reduce climate change.

Essentially, atmospheric carbon is the carbon dioxide in the air and the atmosphere that is produced by worldwide activities by both developing and industrial countries—with around six billion tons released due to the use of fossil fuels.

By comparison, around 30% of carbon dioxide pollution is caused by deforestation, meaning that while, of course, deforestation is a problem which needs to be curbed, the focus needs to be on reducing the use of fossil fuels.

The Negative Effects of Climate Change

Climate change is a serious and worrying concern, and one which is mainly caused by the release of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere as a result of industrial countries burning fossil fuels.

Carbon dioxide is, by far, the world’s most crucial greenhouse gas, which means it is the most important gas which both radiates and absorbs heat, unlike the other two components of the atmosphere—oxygen and nitrogen.

Unfortunately, the effects of climate change are wholly negative and indeed, far-reaching, with the most worrying including the following:

  • More and more species of animal becoming endangered and then extinct
  • Lack of food
  • Rising and warmer oceans
  • Hotter average temperatures across the world
  • Increased severity of drought
  • Displacement and poverty

The Fight to Reduce Atmospheric Carbon

Fortunately, ethical and innovative companies are working together to achieve what is colloquially referred to as “net zero,” which is essentially the ultimate target of entirely eliminating the production of greenhouse gases through industrial activities.

Leading global carbon solutions are being put in place to enable companies—both large and small and across the entire spectrum of industries—to contribute to this fight to eradicate greenhouse gases by the implementation of carbon dioxide removal.

On a smaller scale, committing to reducing, reusing, and recycling every product they use, only working with sustainable suppliers, and investing in office equipment that is entirely “green” certified, local businesses can help.

Other Concerning Environmental Issues

Although atmospheric carbon is the single most devastating contributor to climate change, there are also other negative components and issues which need to be addressed sooner rather than later.

The production of cement is another serious concern and in recent years, many eco-friendlier alternatives have been designed and produced, some of which are steadily increasing in popularity. In addition, deforestation—especially when a large area of trees is destroyed quickly—accelerates the build-up of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.
